George Seton (c.1530-1586)
George Seton, 7th Lord Seton (c.1530-1586) in a work, oil on panel, attributed to Adrian Vanson c.1570's. He was famously one of Mary, Queen of Scots most loyal subjects. For this portrait he is dressed wearing the magnificent clothes he had worn in Paris in 1558 for the wedding of Queen Mary to the Dauphin of France. In his hand he clasps the baton of Master of the Queen's Household, decorated with Mary's monogram. His other hand holds the hilt of his sword to indicate his readiness to fight for his queen. The painting came to the National Portrait Gallery at the bequest of Sir Theophilus Biddulph in 1948 and was received in 1965.
